Free Digital Book Sources

South School Library
I recently started adding eBooks to the South School library, only 31 titles but it's a start. To get to our collection, go to the RSU13 website or the South School library site LINK. On the left side of the screen look for where it says "Follett Shelf". At the top left, click on "Collections", eBooks. Some titles are multiple user, meaning that unlimited numbers of readers can read it at the same time. Multi user books will be clearly labeled.

Brytewave K-12 App

OverDrive
OverDrive is the app that public libraries use to provide access to digital books and digital audio books.  You need a library card from a participating library to borrow items.  All South School teachers are eligible for a free Rockland Public Library card. See me for an application. Books are checked out for two weeks. They are available for all age levels and include fiction and nonfiction. Model use of digital books with your students and encourage them to use their public library cards to access overdrive.  It is possible to filter books by age level and eliminate inappropriate book covers from showing. Check your settings to make these changes or see me for help.

First Book is offered to organizations that serve kids in need.  The South School community meets the requirements to receive free ebooks. The app can be downloaded on an Apple device or on an android device.  These books are published by main stream publishers and include titles like Judy Moody, Jake Drake, Berenstain Bears, Heidi Hecklebeck, and other contemporary fiction titles. Categories include Fiction, Biography, Informational Books, and Early Grades. Books are borrowed, dowloaded into a personal bookshelf, and then returned. Please see me to set up usernames and passwords for your students.

Book Bub LINK
Book Bub is a daily email that you can sign up for.  You choose the categories of books that you are interested in including children's books. This is an inexpensive way to build up your digital library collection. Book Bub selections can be added to your iBook shelf or your Google Play account.

Tumble Books LINK
South School subscribes to Tumblebooks and it is accessible from home or school and can be used on laptops as well as iPads and tablets. See your South Subscriptions page in your shared Google Docs for login information.

Download the iBooks app from the Apple store. From the app you can search books and audiobooks by category. If you click on "top charts" at the bottom of the app, you will see the left side column is for paid books and the right side column is for FREE books, including books for children.

Storynory
Storynory has folktales, fables, myths, poems and more.  These are really well done. Text is provided so kids can read along if they want.

Storyline Online
There are only a couple dozen titles here but each one is worth reading.  Check out Rena Moreno's reading of "I Need My Monster".

The Gutenberg site has ebooks that can be read on any device. There are over 50,000 titles with a focus on classics that have expired copyrights. Children's Picture Books, Children's Myths, Children's Periodicals, Children's Literature are some of the categories.

Lucy Calkins

The following Lucy Calkins resources may be helpful to you.
  1. The Heinemann website has Progressions, Rubrics, Checklists, Writing Samples, and Demonstration Texts. We were given a login code at the workshop that may or not still work.  Let me know if you would like to give it a try. Here's the link, LINK
  2. Units of Study, Lucy Calkins website LINK
  3. Lucy Calkins Videos, LINK
  4. The North Clackamas school district has broken down Lucy Calkins units into one page session summaries. For more information visit their website, LINK.

"A committee of instructional coaches and teachers with deep understanding of and experience with Units of Study, have created one page summaries of each writing session with clear targets. They want to emphasize, however, that they are not a substitute for reading the lessons; they are a guide to help teachers when planning and teaching. And they are working documents-feel free to revise them and make them your own. In addition, the following support materials have been created for you:

 • A grade to grade scope and sequence.
• State Standards student tracking sheets for each grade level.
 • An alignment of State Standards to Units of Study
• Anchor papers for each grade: this is what a proficient writing sample is.
• A K-2 Scoring Guide (in draft stage)

Providing writing instruction for students is a collaborative effort of K-12 teachers. It is important that each teacher uses our core writing program. A core curriculum allows students to build on what they learned the year before. Consistency in language, formats, and models allows students to focus on deeper understanding of concepts and skills. What a student did last year connects to what he is doing this year. The second or third time a student experiences a unit of study, keener insights lead to a more thorough transfer of skills to their writing. Teachers also know what concepts were taught. Writing samples can be passed on from grade to grade."
